Telephoto Lenses Review
Most telephoto lenses on the market is equipped with image stabilizer this allows in part to reduce the problem of motion sensitivity but at the same time it appreciably increases the final price.
Telephoto lenses amplify the movements of the room, in addition to the images, so almost always come with a foot to hook onto a tripod. Canon, Nikon and other manufacturers offer telephoto lenses with image stabilizer that, within limits, allows for sharp images without a tripod. It is very effective devices in cases where it is not possible to use the tripod, which however always remains the best option.
As for the brightness of telephoto lenses, do not expect very low just to give you an idea, one of the most interesting targets on the market is the Nikon or Canon 600mm f 4 (pictured above). Excellent brightness considered the focal length, but very long even the price fluctuates between 7 and 8 thousand euro.
For those who want a telephoto lens and not spend a fortune, there is an intermediate solution of the composition of a less extreme telephoto which the 200mm f 2.8 coupled with a teleconverter (which we will see in a future article). If, for example, you are coupled to the first 200mm of which a multiplier is 2X has the possibility to reach the same focal length of 400mm. Please note that a focal converter multiplier produces a loss of brightness equal to 1 stop for the 1.4X and 2 stop for the 2X (the minimum focus distance remains however unchanged). Their cost is not really affordable, but certainly allows to obtain an equivalent 400mm to about half the price.
In the telephoto lens category also fall the catadioptric objectives that we talked about earlier.
Curiosity the largest telephoto lens ever made is signed Canon and dates back to the ’60s. It is a 5200mm characterized by a minimum focusing distance of 120 meters and able to shoot objects placed between 28km and 52km. The goal, built in only three copies, was equipped with a fixed aperture to f 14 (a bit ‘dark!) And was in fact a catadioptric.
Needless to say, it was necessary to place it on something seen very light weight and footprint! In the two pictures below, an example of what this monster was able to photograph.
